Fototur til på Lundeura Rounds

16-19 april 2012 I was four trips to Lundeura on Lap to take pictures of Puffin. I packed gear at 17 o'clock, and pulled up from the parking lot in Goksøyra at 18 o'clock. I came down from the mountains between 22-23 every night.

Here I thought sharing some of the images and experiences of the trip with you. Further down the blog you will find pictures, and a video image.

For visitors, and those who are not so familiar with Lundeura, so is this the Round Mountain in Herøy M&R. Most travelers go hit by car. Driving by car from Ørsta, Volda or Hareid takes barely an hour. Normally parked on the ramp in Mon Goksøyra, the right just after it exits the tunnel. It takes between 30-45 minute to go up, depending on the pace to entering the. If you plan to be in the mountains until it gets dark so remember to bring a torch or similar. Leaving the mountain early in the season so bring warm clothes even if it's sunny and nice weather. When the sun goes down in Lundeura (21-Currently in the middle of april), it gets very cold to stand still to shoot the bird.

Wikipedia writes the following about Puffins (reference):

“Lunde (Fratercula arctica) is also known as puffins and sjøpapegøye. The species belongs to the auks and breed in the northern hemisphere. It is pelagic.

Species' scientific names are sometimes misleading translated to "little brother Arctic». It means rather "small arctic brotherhood (the importance of faith in the shed Monastery)», which probably refers to the black and white plumage reminiscent of a monk cuts. The beak of the puffins have a clear color during breeding season, It has reddish yellow stripes convex backward and dark brown back. Around the eye has the bird a gray spot. On top is black bird, the underside is white. It has a black ring around the neck, and pale ash on the sides of the head and throat. In winter plumage, legs reddish yellow.

Newfoundland and Labrador has grove national bird.

An adult is roughly between 28 and 35 cm long, and has a wingspan of 50-60 cm. The swim and dive with unusual skill, often fly very low over the waves and cut through them with his beak while the wings and feet turn in the water. With whirring movement of the short wings it flies pretty quickly. Puffins feed the fish, mussels, worms and crustaceans. The lifetime is around 25 years.”

Activity in Lundeura usually begins in mid-April, and the best time to visit Lundeura's probably in April / May. Number of birds depend heavily on the availability of food, and each year, the supply has been so poor that the whole litter of pups have been abandoned by their parents.

Here is a picture video of some of the pictures I took;

Here is some general advice when you sit in Lundeura;

  • Avoid yelling and sudden movements that can scare the birds or interfere with other people who are there to enjoy the birds. Some enthusiasts use their vacation, and much time and money to experience it as us nærbuende take for granted.
  • If the sun is at, then it comes in April / May as a rule from the right. You may want to place them so that they can utilize the light from the bird in the best possible way.
  • Study like the pattern for the bird comes in and sits down. It can vary from day to day which side they come from, and how high they enter, but there is often a pattern to the way the birds coming into the.
  • When it comes to camera equipment, so you can use most when it comes to photos of Puffin sitting on the ground. As the bird is then removed as a meter, there are many who get nice pictures with the usual pocket camera. For those who use SLR with interchangeable lenses, I can recommend everything from 50-400 mm. If you want to take pictures of birds in flight, so are the requirements for equipment slightly higher. Then you should have fast lenses in the area 150-600 mm, happy with the brightness 2.8. It is also an advantage of a camera housing having a very good autofocus system, and often with opportunities to take an 4-10 fps. It is also recommended to experiment with flash.
  • Taking Puffins in flight is very difficult, but here are some tips that can help:
    • regarding technical setting camera, I use to set the camera tracking, time priority (1/1000 -1/2500 sek), as I leave the ISO and aperture flow. Many prefer the blender onto the largest opening (lowest number), attaching ISO, and let the closing time flow. Many people choose to change the camera setting so that they can follow-focus, press and hold a button behind the camera (often referred to as back focus), and take the picture by pressing the shutter button. Most camera manufacturers have the opportunity for this. It may also be wise to take pictures in smaller sequences for not filling up the buffer. I also use a technique referred to as pump focus, and it simply goes out that instead of letting tracking work all the time, I let it work in the intervals when I follow birds in flight. This is to reduce the possibility of focusing the lens away in the background. Several camera manufacturers have the ability to program a set of settings for quick buttons. Other tips to control any anti-blur technology (can be both in the body or lens), and focus points (Matrix or center point). There is a link to forøvrig tips to take pictures of birds in flight.
    • a technique may be to concentrate on a bird enters a time. Follow this throughout the approach.
    • Another technique is to forhandsfokusere at a point in the scree where birds often get past, and simply try to hit a bird.
    • It is also easier to focus on the bird as it should get ready to sit down. It lowers the speed, and in a millisecond stand still in the air.
  • Look around, suddenly you have an eagle right over your head or behind you.
  • Try to photograph both with and without stand. Do you stand with large lenses, is a so-called “Gimbalhead” preferable.
  • Do not use the time to take pictures when it's busiest. Take a quick check to see if everything is ok, but do not let yourself fall for the temptation to look at the pictures before you have time.
  • If you have a telephoto lens, You might want to turn around to photograph the birds that sit up the scree behind you. It may also be easier to take pictures of birds in flight from this site since you can watch birds taking off. This angle can also give you nice blue sky background.
  • The birds often come in several rounds. Use the time in between for creative photography, planning and evaluation of images, not to mention a nice chat :-)
  • Is it sunny Lundeura, so you can get some great landscape- and sunset photos too.

  1. Hei,
Very nice post, great tips, video and pictures :)
I'm going to AES this weekend and considering going to round to take some photos of birds. I have no car, and therefore I have to take a boat / bus to get to there. I can not find usable information about this, maybe you know more about vehicles there?
What other kinds of birds are there in Round? Is it possible to photograph them at midday? I can not be there until sunset since I have to get back to Ålesund.. or would you recommend to stay there?

    Thanks in advance!
    Mvh,
    Richard

    • Thank you Richard,

it to reach the Round without a car is not the easiest thing in the world. There goes as far as bus, but not on the weekend http://reise2.fjord1.no/Fjord1IISStaticTables/Tables/ruter/t/15-165.htm
The easiest way is probably by car. Accommodation at Goksøyr Camping can be recommended.
Of the birds you can see in the middle of the day at the Round Mountain can be Ørn, Skua, Peregrine Falcon, In addition to puffins (most of 1800 and beyond). Otherwise I recommend to contact Ålesund Sunnmøre Trekking on phone 70 12 58 04 or info@aast.no
You can read more about it here; http://www.turistforeningen.no/alesund/
Round can also offer accommodation in the Round Guy (self), diverse charter boat, Environment Centre, Round with tax and more.

      Regards kay

      • Hei Kay,
Thanks for the information! I'll check some more about it. I can go there on Friday, I hope, so it gets easier with buses. It is reported rain, but I hope I get to see some birds :)
It's exciting with so fine types of bird, but it is a pity that I only have a canon 55-250mm.. not the best quality, but it should be enough to keep.
Should also think about the night there, it may be appropriate if I can come back on Saturday by bus / boat.

        Best Hilsner,
        Richard
