At Easter, I researched a bit on taking pictures of ice in a river in Dagali. Ice melting in water creates endless formations. If the sun comes out, the combination between ice, running water and light from the sun to create images with artistic touch.
When in his eagerness to take artistic pictures or along a river, It is important to;
- put on warm clothes, and often have something to warm your fingers with.
- Good footwear, Be prepared that you may end up in vannet.
- Use a tripod for the camera.
- Watch where you step and step, plan every step, and make sure the rack is always steady.
- Do not go where the river is rough or deep – it's not worth putting yourself or damage to equipment.
- I use the macro lens that is easy to reach, and where it is risky, I use either a telephoto lens.
I use to set your camera to a long shutter (minimum 0,5 second) so I get silky flowing water. I use as small aperture as possible (large pine) so that I get maximum depth of field in your photos. Set the ISO as low as possible. You may want to use manual settings. I use when setting ISO first, then aperture, and finally closing the. You may want to “fuck” the aperture number one or two steps from the higher number.
In good conditions, and when I have plenty of time to compose images, I often use a screen on the back of the camera. Then you may want to zoom in, and put the focus manually. It gives you great control.
If you have no remote release, You can fine use the timed self-timer on the camera.
It may also be wise to use the histogram for composing pictures, to avoid burned portions of the image. When dealing with snow and ice, it is often difficult to assess the finished photo before going on a proper monitor (PC). It may also be wise to activate “burnout warning” on camera. The areas that are burned will flash on the screen when you are considering photo.
Here are some examples of ice art pictures that I have taken;
